Fabrica Mundi » refers more to a modus operandi, an artistic protocol, than to the object resulting from the creative process. This expression refers to the dynamics that lie at the root of any artistic gesture, rather than fetishising its final product. Diana Righini thus assembles fragments and reorganises them in a new configuration that gives them a new use, a new meaning, in relation to their initial function. From then on, the artist’s approach tends to offer us a new perspective on the materials she collects, to vary our viewpoints on the world and the objects that constitute it. In short, she invites us to move and to put our thinking in motion, far from the rigid categories and stereotypes that irrigate opinion.

Indeed, the cards entitled We are all someone else’s South reveal the relativity of our perceptions and judgements. The world, understood as a « common » world, a space open to the plurality of people, is illuminated by a multitude of approaches and sensibilities. « The world ends when it is perceived from only one aspect, when it is allowed to present itself from only one perspective », Hannah Arendt predicted darkly, announcing the emergence of a one-dimensional society, the daughter of triumphant capitalism and the ethnocentrism of Western politics.

Fabrica Mundi » then recalls that Gerard Mercator’s Atlas, the first scientific cartography created in 1595, coincides with the emergence of European colonialism and imperialism. The delineation of borders and maritime routes consecrated the advent of nation-states and capitalist expansionism, and transformed the world to suit them. The Map is not the Territory thus underlines the fundamentally contingent and arbitrary nature of our representations. Far from reproducing the contours of a stable world that is objectively given to us, maps are rather the result of a desire to manipulate and appropriate territories. Thus, the « Fabrica Mundi » merely reflects a particular point of view on the world which, by creating a map, attempts to produce, impose and legitimise its own vision of the globe (designation of a centre to the detriment of a periphery, ostracisation of regions and populations, territorialisation of identities, borders between peoples, races, classes, genders, etc.) ».
